The business community appears to have won an easy one in convincing Gov. Mark Dayton to back down from a proposed sales tax on business-to-business services. After all, it’s all but impossible to find a policy wonk who thinks it is good tax policy. But those from business who jumped into the debate say they didn’t think it was easy, didn’t win by quoting wonks or writing white papers...

Mark Dayton certainly doesn't want to drive the law firm Fish & Richardson out of the state. But if the governor's proposal to expand the state sales tax to legal services becomes law, the Fish & Richardson office in Minnesota almost certainly will not be around much longer....
Gov. Dayton's tax plan is not fair. It's not competitive. It's not good for Minnesota's recovering economy. And it runs counter to Dayton's stated desire to shield middle-class Minnesotans from higher taxes. They would wind up paying tax hikes hidden in higher prices and, for workers in the most affected industries, in lower wages and lost jobs....
