MBP Letter: Support for Teach for America’s variance request

Dear Members of the Board of Teaching:

We are writing in support of Teach for America’s request for a variance from the Board of Teaching for their 2013-14 cohort of corps members.

Through the Board’s prior approval, Teach for America’s (TFA) partnership with Hamline University has created a positive alternative pathway for preparing teachers who serve students in our Twin Cities public schools.  Perhaps the best testimonial in support of the Board’s approval of TFA’s variance comes from the principals who’ve managed and worked with TFA corps members:

  1. 100% of principals report TFA corps members make a positive impact in their schools; and
  2. 100% of principals would recommend hiring a TFA corps member to a fellow school leader.

We also view TFA’s variance request as a successful strategy for increasing the diversity of new teachers entering our classrooms – 29% of the requested cohort would become teachers of color.

We’d like to thank the Board of Teaching for their prior support of TFA’s partnership with Hamline University, and ask that you approve their current variance request.

Thank you.
